Volcano Hike – Chinyero

This hike is very enjoyable! It is perfect if you are looking for an intermediate yet relatively easy hike. There are several starting points, and you will walk around the Chinyero Volcano, the last to erupt on Tenerife, which notably impacted the town of Garachico.

You’ll wander through pine forests and along lava gravel trails, offering a true delight for nature lovers!

Ideal for those seeking an intermediate experience while remaining accessible, the walk around the Chinyero Volcano is a must-do. As the last active volcano on Tenerife, it ravaged the town of Garachico during its eruption. What awaits you is an immersion into majestic pine forests and lava gravel trails that bear witness to the island’s volcanic history.

Practical Information:

  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Loop: Yes
  • Difficulty: 1/5
  • Distance: 12 km

Step 1: Find a Place to Park

There are several options depending on your starting point:

  • From the Northwest (El Tanque, Garachico…): Head to the Ecomuseo parking lot. Trailheads are located nearby here or here.
  • From Teide or to be closer to Chinyero: Choose the Sendero del Chinyero as your starting point.

Step 2: Walk Through Pine Forests

We chose the first parking option mentioned, following a paved road by car to find a spot. The hike begins on a trail that is initially unremarkable, but soon youโ€™ll find yourself in an enchanting atmosphere within the heart of pine forests. These towering trees create a striking setting, offering a moment of absolute tranquility.

As you progress, you’ll cross gentle hills that gradually reveal spectacular views of Mount Teide and finally the majestic Chinyero.

Step 3: Climbing Chinyero

We decided to climb the Chinyero. Although the trails are somewhat improvised by the hikers’ footsteps, they remain accessible. Once at the top, you will be rewarded with a 360-degree panoramic view, showcasing the crater and the impressive lava flows outlining its contours.

Step 4: The Return

After the ascent, the loop continues to complete the tour around Chinyero. You will then descend back towards the pine forests, quietly finding your way to your starting point. This final section of the hike offers a moment of relaxation before you return to your vehicle.

A perfect route to enjoy Tenerife’s natural and historical diversity while remaining accessible to all levels of hikers!
